The music business is a cartel - The music industry is effectively run by three corporations. Three. These corporation hold the rights to enough music that they can collude to prevent innovation and maintain artificially high prices for consumers. While the effects may be obvious, it’s time to start using the word cartel, which as a specific legal meaning. When asked for permission, they resist progress, and when it is forced upon them they sue. Labels are to culture what patent trolls are to business.
Aside: I recall reading a while back that Brin, Page & Schmidt had the collective wealth to buy the entire music industry.
